In my quest to try and save money, I hired a local guy to stain my brand new deck. I purchased PPG Transparent. Needless to say, it showed in his application that he was inexperienced. You can see where he overlapped the stain. These areas look dark and uneven. It looks terrible, and the railings are 2 different colors as well. He said that he can add a second coat. If he adds a second coat, the stain will be darker and the darker areas more dark. I was not going for a dark stain, I want to see the grain in the wood, therefore transparent. I do not know what to do. Do I have to get someone to sand? Or use a stripper liquid? I want to re-apply the same color, properly. This time I will use a professional.

You will need to remove and start over. Strip off what you can and then sand the rest. Use a wood brightener when done. In addition, did you let the new wood season? See this about new wood:

Any suggestion on what brand/type of stripper? The stain is a Woodland Oil base. Also do you think I can accomplish the stripping myself, or leave to a professionals because of the complexity? I appreciate the information and I waited 6 months before staining the new deck. This site is very informative and I feel better prepared. Now I am in corrective action mode. Will keep the forum posted. Thank You.

Hi, I have answered my own question and read the section on best strippers to use, and the Defy is probably the best for me. This is an awesome site.
