You have to prep and Penofin has a tendency to darken or turn black in color.

I have a Douglas fir 950 sq ft deck new 2 years ago it has no graying or obvious mold that I can see

I am new to deck staining how extensive prep should I do and what stain. The builder said I should use Penofin but I read some negative things about it.

We have never used a product like this so not sure if it can be stained. Have you asked the EcoWood people for advice on if their product can have a stain applied without issues?

BTW, a deck stain will not prevent dog pee from creating an issue. It will get through and discolor the wood.

Hey, love the site, very informative. My question is in regard to EcoWood Treatment. This is purported to be disodium octoborate tetrahydrate / boron / boric acid system similar to Timbor or Board Defense. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with it over time. I've applied it over new Western Red Cedar decks this summer and have been pleased with initial results...satisfying silver patina. One of my clients has a dog that pees on the deck and leaves stains however, and I'm tasked with finding another solution. I was thinking of sanding, stripping and using Restore a Deck semi transparent stain. Question is what effect the EcoWood will have on the new stain...it penetrates quite deeply into the cedar. Any other suggestions?

I came across your website while trying to educate myself about deck staining and found the reviews helpful. However, the deck guy who may be refinishing our deck sent me a link that lumps your site in with some other sites with a different domain name. He’s recommending Olympic which gets only ok reviews. It’s so hard these days to know what to believe. I just want to make sure your site is legitimate and not associated with those other sites:

Any of those would work but not sure to availability or shipment to Europe. Probably the Amber from AC would be best.

Hello,
I am new and not sure how to enter my question in the right place.
I live in France (Europe). I have read on some french forums that the american stains are better-lasting but I'm not sure if it would be possible to have one delivered (by courrier? )
I have 6-month old untreated wooden shutters, meranti or okube (exotic wood from Asia). I want to keep the color as close as possible to the original color which is light pinkish-brown. I have read your reviews, and was thinking of either
-Messmer's hardwood (natural)
-Armstrong-Clark hardwood (amber)
-Defy hardwood (natural pine)
They seem quite close in the results of ratings. My shutters get alot of sun in summer, and rain in winter.

We have used the Wood Defender many years ago and it was a decent product. Easily applied. Believe it had a silicone in it? Did not hold color as long as the TWP on horizontals.

What general location are you, administration, located?

I used a product, made in Mansfield Texas, Standard Paints is the parent company and the product name is Wood Defender.

It was used for wood fencing but I have used it for horizontal pieces also and would like to know if you would test this product and how it stacks up to the TWP and Defy stains...
