As long as the new stain is the same color or slightly darker then it should blend.
If you maintain the coating before it goes to full failure then you can just clean and reapplying. Typically every couples of years. If you neglect it...

We use little plastic spray bottles. Like a windex bottle and spray it into those hard to reach areas.
Oils are much easier to strip then water based stains. The steps are correct.
