I am currently in the process of stripping Cabot SFP 48 from my 400 square foot deck as there is a lot of peeling occurring on the floor boards/hand rail, but not spindles. I used a chemical stripper (ready strip purchased from home depot)and scraper to remove some of the stain. The stripper is not removing it all (a lot of areas still exhibit stain) so I then switched to a belt sander (with both 50 and 80 grit paper. Sanding is taking quite a bit of time and not removing it all as the surface is not completely smooth. What do you recommend for removing this stain? What type of stripper? Method of removing stain (ie using a pressure washer with the stripper or scraper? Sanding after using a chemical stripper? What type of sander and grit?
The spindles are not peeling but how should I handle the spindles? Do I attempt to remove the stain?
Lastly, what do you recommend for a stain for my pressure treated deck. I live in Massachusetts and my deck is exposed to a lot of sun. I don't mind reapplying stain every year. I just do not want to go through the process of stripping stain again!
Thanks so much!
Another question; do you think renting a drum floor sander (12 amp/1.5 HP) at home depot would be a good alternative?
We do not touch SPF decks for the very reason you are having trouble. This product does not strip or come off well. You will have to keep sanding it off. Look at 40 or 60 girt paper. I would not do the rails unless peeling. Maybe do a two toned deck. Keep rails one color and do the floor in another color.
Use a penetrating stain for the deck when done removing. TWP 1500 Series or Armstrong Clark.
