Finally, do you think it best to clean/stain now before the winter, or would it be best to deal with the little mold spots now and let it weather until the spring?

We want to do what is best for the long-term; short term aesthetics are unimportant to us.

- Asheville, NC
- Upper & lower decks (DekDrain waterproofing), Outdoor Stairs
- Pressure Treated Lumber
- Full sun - upper deck & stairs
- Shade - Lower screened deck
- Mildew/mold problems in the lower deck and a few spots in upper deck

We just replaced 10-year-old decks that were rotting. They were built with kiln-dried woods that swelled and provided insufficient drainage. The shady lower deck was not waterproofed and turned green with algea.

The decks are five to six months old; the stairs are two months old. We started seeing small black molds spots on the lower deck almost immediately after installation.

We would like to clean the decks and stairway, treat the mold spots and stain with a semi-transparent stain when appropriate. We really want to get this one right, particularly after our terrible experience with the previous deck.

Consumer Reports recommends Behr. I am suspicious. I would be grateful for your recommendation on products and timing.
