When you prep you remove the oxidized dried wood cells. This opens the grain and the sap will leach out. There is nothing you can do to prevent this. It just happens randomly and not to every deck.

I'm confused as to how it would be the natural sap coming out from inside the wood if it's a 4 year old deck, it's never done it before now (including during the 2-3 weeks after I sanded the previous stain off while waiting for a stretch of 48 hours w/o rain) and then it happened immediately in the hours after I stained the wood. I could totally be wrong, but b/c of all that it seems like it would have to be the stain. Am I missing something?

If it is the stain I don't know why it happened and the deck looks bad with these shiny thin lines of glop on quite a few of the boards...  😟

Nothing you did wrong and nothing you can really do to prevent this.

Deck is mostly shaded by trees and house with about 2 hours of direct sun each day. Not sure what type of wood, but not cedar and not a tropical wood. I sanded the deck just to be sure this first time and after a rare 48 hours w/o rain I applied TWP 103 Dark Oak with a brush. I finished staining around 8:30pm and it started raining at 7am the next morning and has rained almost continuously for 3 days. Now that rain stopped there is stain that has oozed out of cracks in the wood (see attached picture). I tried wiping it with a cloth and mineral spirits but it's dried into what is like hardened epoxy. Help! What did I do wrong and what do I do now?446
