I am sharing freely for the benefit of anyone my positive experience experimenting with cedar stain formulas for my house.

Two years ago, after searching forums extensively, including this one, i put together various ideas and came up with a process to restain my red cedar siding to show the wood grain without highlighting imperfections in the wood. I stripped the cedar to clean bare wood chemically and with a pressure washer then prestained with Cabot's semitransparent oil based stain, wiped the wet stain dry with a cotton cloth mop, and then applied the following mixture liberally:

1 gallon Sikkens Cetol SRD translucent stain, Cedar color
1 gallon Boiled linseed oil
1/2 gallon Helmsman Spar urethane
1 qt gum turpentine
4 1.5oz bottles of M-1 mold prevention paint additive from D-mand Better Products (Home Depot)
up to 1/2 gallon mineral spirits to thin the mixture to desired consistency and penetration, depending on temperature, etc.

After two harsh winters I could not be happier. The siding is still beautiful, with lots of grain showing, rich natural color, and a firm but flexible finish well integrated with the wood, free of signs of mold or fading. It honestly looks the same as the day I Finished staining. I describe the project, with pictures, on my personal blog:

Disclaimer: I'm an amateur, not an expert, and I have no commercial interest of any relevance. I just thought someone else might benefit from this.
