I believe they add a silica that dives deep in the wood to react with the alkali, potentially stabilizing the cells. It is not the first gimmick type product to promise longer life for wood but is the latest. Other similar products attempted to make a claim and all were found out to not actually help. They added tints for their products to help with some color UV fading. Never actually used it though so have no idea on the viability to it.

Thanks.

I found that I can get Messmers stain locally. And like your review, it seems not bad. Especially if it's one of their tinted stains that would've probably done better with the UV rating, on your review.

But, am I going to find the same issue of too much build up, like with the SRD? I know it penetrates well, but after a few maintenance coats, there's gotta be a build up. Then with the oil based resins, that are more brittle than waterborne, acrylic resins, I'd get the peeling again. Correct?

Keeping in mind, I tend to keep up on my maintenance. I know, a bit rare these days...:)

So I wonder if I'd be better off with a water base stain. As it would build up, the softer resins would weather better, similar to a solid water base stain?

Maybe I'm overthinking again! lol

Please help before my mind blows!

Nolan

Unfortunately, we have no experience with the Permachink product. Being you are Canada, you are not going to find some of the better products in your local stores. The SW stains are not a favorite for us on decking, but in general, all exterior semi-trans stains will do much better on verticals. Problem is you want one the does not build up or film, and the only water-based stain that does this well is the Defy products. I am not sure of there is a good product for you to buy locally that does what you would like.
