Railings are done and got a coat on the deck yesterday. I ended up using a solid oil based cabot stain based upon the recommendation of this forum and my local paint store.

Where the stain went over bare wood it looks a little different than when it went over the existing coating of stain.

Would a second coat improve the look?

Cabot does not recommend a second coat. It has been on for about 18 hours. If I do put a second coat on it needs to dry for at least 24 right?

Thanks so much for any help. All the advice I have gotten from these forums has been spot on!
Unfortunately a lot of the local retailers in my area are not selling Flood. I really do not know why.

Is there another brand of stain you would recommend for a job like this? I really do not want to have to go through the work of stripping the entire thing. I want it to look OK and be functional for 2 to 3 years. Nothing up here lasts longer than 3 years outside anyway....

Much thanks in advance!

Thank you to all who have posted on this site. There is some GREAT information!

Here is my situation. I bought a house in Hopkinton, MA about four years ago. It is in a great neighborhood, and we love where we live. Our house is a contemporary which is pretty unusual for Metro West MA. Most of the houses out here are very traditional colonials.

I believe the deck was re done about four years ago. It was stained with Flood SWF Solid. (An old can was in the garage when we bought the house.)

This is a high traffic area for us. For most of the year it is the main access point to our house.

The stain is coming up in a few sections, most likely where rock salt was mistakenly used on some ice build up.

Here are my questions:

Can I reapply a solid stain over this coating?

I'd like to change the color to something darker. Any insight here is much appreciated as the color of my house is unique!

Does it have to be the same brand?

I would prefer the easiest and cheapest solution possible.

THANK YOU
