1- Would I need to do anything to prep the deck for the darker stain? They used a semi-transparent stain and put 2 coats on, so I assume i can just go over the top.

2- Would the color of the darker stain possibly be effected by the lighter color? I would tend to think it would be slightly, but the darker color should completely cover (I would find an out of sight spot to test first).

1. What they applied is not semi-transparent. Either they applied the wrong stain, or the manufacturer "lied" about its opacity, as it clearly looks like a solid stain. For prep, make sure it is clean.

2. Not when applying a couple of coats of solid stain over this, as it will cover it fully.

The easiest is to apply a darker solid stain over it. Look at Restore A Deck Solid Stain in the Brown Oak or Espresso colors:

I have no experience with this so if there are questions I will try my best. I am in NC and recently had a new deck built. We went with someone that our contractor had recommended for staining the deck and were trying to get the deck to match our existing fence. When they finished (I was not present for this) the final look is much brighter and lighter than the fence.

My question is, am I looking at stripping this off and starting all over, or would it be possible to go over it with a few coats of something darker to get close to the fence? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
