I found the application with a brush to be easy on the vertical and the top side of horizontal boards. The stain absorbed well. Where there was some pooling of stain, I wiped it with a rag to avoid some of the problems other users seem to have had. I applied a second coat within 30 minutes and let the product cure.

The main problem I had was staining the underside of my deck boards. The stain (probably all stains) is fairly thin and the stain quickly ran back down the brush, my arm, etc.... It was quite the mess. I then tried a painting pad. This was a better process, but still quite messy.

So, there must be a better process. I had considered using a garden sprayer but by the time I had done both the brushing and pad application, I was 1/2 done so I just finished the job. I also wasn't that keen on the idea of spraying an oil based stain vertically.
