Yes, you will need to strip and brighten for the prep now. In the future, you can clean and brighten if using the same stain brand. BTW, deck stripping is not any harder than using a deck cleaner.

So since we are switching from a transparent to semi-transparent, we have to strip the old stain? If we do that and put on a semi-transparent, can we just reapply the same stain every couple of years (or however long it lasts)? Just wanting to understand what kind of maintenance we are in for. Stripping, brightening and restaining is a lot of work!

If switching brands, it is best to remove the TO. This is easily done with a deck stain stripper and light pressure washing. Use the Restore A Deck Stripper and Brightener Kit for this. For the stain, try something with more pigment as that equals longer UV protection. The Timber Oil is a transparent stain. A Semi-transparent will give slightly longer UV protection and a semi-solid will give even more. Look at the Armstrong Clark Stains.

We live in Kentucky. Our deck is pressured treated wood and gets partial sun.

We had a deck installed in Fall 2015. We wanted to get something on the deck before winter, so we put on Woodrich Timber Oil. We had enough left to put an additional coat of Timber Oil on last Fall (2016). We are thinking we should put something more heavy-duty on our deck this year to protect and preserve the wood. Since we did Timber Oil, what kind of preparation will we need to do to the deck before staining? I like the natural look of the wood, but of course want the deck to be protected and last for many years to come! Any recommendations are very welcome.
